THE INTERROGATION: DARK DESIRES CHAPTER 3

His head throbbed and his neck was stiff as he regained consciousness. He couldn’t see anything but he could tell there was a blindfold tied around his head. He made a loud mumbling sound as he tried to speak. The pain around his mouth as he tried to force it open told him the duct tape was secure. “Oh good. You’re awake finally. I guess that cabinet was heavier than I had thought.” The voice was soft and feminine. She sounded young as well. Late teens he suspected. The weight of her footsteps indicated that she was heavy set or wearing heavy boots. The thud of her steps got louder.  He could feel the ground below him vibrate with intensity as she approached him. In a moment of searing pain the tape came away from his flesh. He sucked in as much of the warm air as he could in a gasp for oxygen and pain. His back ached from his neck down and he couldn’t feel his left leg. The temperature of the air was only surprising in that it had been early mid morning when he entered the barn. Thi

Waiting. Watching. Surveilling. It takes time to catch the worst of the worst. But it’s time well spent. At least that's the argument Detective Wreech would make. How else would he have defended the time apart in front of a judge in divorce court — all four times. He was making sacrifices for the greater good.

He saw his target exit the quaint white house and get in a black SUV. It barrelled down the long driveway and exited onto the main road. It headed in the opposite direction of his hideaway in a thicket of woods about a quarter mile down the road. It was usually harder to find a good hiding spot to watch these farmhouses on account of all the wide open acreage.

Wreech waited it out for a few more minutes to make sure his suspect didn’t return. And to watch the house for activity. Ten minutes later he made his way toward the house. He followed the worn path around back instead of stopping there. He was more interested in seeing what old Jim did with his time out back.

His tires crept to a stop in front of the barn. On the front he found a padlock holding the two main doors closed. He worked his way around the side and found a regular size door. He reached out and turned the knob. It clicked open.

There wasn’t a lot inside. It was a large open space with an old beat up tractor and some stairs leading up to the loft. The lighting was dim, so Wreech pulled out his flashlight and clicked it on. He moved around the building checking each dark corner as he went.

There was an empty workbench on one side. A few metal cabinets next to it. He pulled the handles on one and it popped open. There wasn’t much inside. A few rusty old tools and some old ‘Chilton’ car repair manuals. He moved over to the next cabinet with similar results. Nothing of importance.

The next cabinet stood out though. Secured with a shiny silver padlock and fresh swing marks on the floor. Someone had opened the cabinet doors recently. “Gotcha,” said Detective Wreech out loud as he scanned the room for a way to open the lock.

A strange sound came from upstairs. KWOOOOOOSH... It sounded almost as if someone was pushing something heavy across the floor of the loft above him. No one was home, he was sure of that. It could be the sounds of the old structure shifting in the wind. He needed to find something to break that padlock anyway.

He crept up the stairs toward the loft with his weapon drawn. He aimed his flashlight ahead as he moved forward one step at a time. He had been well trained at the academy to check his corners but he didn’t even see it coming.

He felt a sharp pain across the back of his neck and down his spine. Then came a dramatic increase in weight. He crumpled over onto the stairs and felt an incredible pain in his legs. He heard the sound of wood crashing against wood. He slid down the stairs in pain but he couldn't stop himself.

He could hear his flashlight and gun falling down the stairs near him. His vision darkened as the edges of his sight started to close in around him. He heard the laughter of a young woman's voice and looked up toward the top of the stairs. He saw a human silhouette as his vision went dark. His final gasp carried one word off the tip of his tongue and through his lips.

“Who?..”
